BrainBasket will teach 400 school teachers Web-development

Every year, more and more new educational IT-projects appear in Ukraine both for children and adults. Due to the courses, anyone can try his or her hand at programming. Thus, the Ukrainian educational foundation BrainBasket recently received $ 150,000 from the International Renaissance Foundation for the development of the Technology Nation Social and Educational Program in 2018-2019. The purpose of the program is to give everyone an opportunity to learn the basics of programming free of charge and to understand whether they have the ability to use information technology.

The solution to the issue of training for the IT-industry requires systemic vision, trust and interaction between market players, state support and the ability to integrate already existing good practices. The BrainBasket team is currently actively involved in discussions on this issue on a number of platforms, knows the problems and is ready to join the implementation of system solutions. The Technology Nation, supported by the Renaissance Foundation, is just one of the solutions. But to my mind, thanks to an innovative approach and the ability to scale the program to all areas of Ukraine, it is a very useful element.
— Marina Vyshegorodskykh, Member of Supervisory Board in BrainBasket

The program is divided into two stages. The first training phase will include several directions, the central part of which will be the preparation of 400 school computer teachers within the frames of WOW Teachers Program with a modern basic Web development course. Upon completion of the courses, they will be able to include the elements of the course in their school lessons or independently conduct the training of adolescents in an extracurricular format, which will further increase the scale of the project. It is expected that at least half of the trained teachers will organize courses for over 4,000 teens, based on BrainBasket training hubs, in 36 cities of Ukraine during the following year with the support of such IT-companies as Ciklum, Luxoft, GlobalLogic, Navigator and others. The program has already been successfully tested in the spring of 2018 at groups of teachers in Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Sumy, as well as a group of senior pupils in Zaporozhye.

During the development of the curriculum were used materials from well-known world-class institutions and online resources (University of London, W3schools, Microsoft, Mozilla MDN, etc.). In the future, there is a plan for creating an educational video course that could be used as an online tutorial for Web development by anyone.

Within the framework of the second stage of Technology Nation, there will be developed and conducted another, more advanced course – School Boost. It also targets 400 teachers and concentrates on cybersecurity, media literacy and media hygiene. When creating this course it is planned to involve all market players which are working in this direction in cooperation.

In addition to a preparation of teachers in 2018-2019, BrainBasket will also continue to educate adults on Harvard and MIT programming, the IT Moms project, and the teaching of children within the Technology Nation Kids project. Since 2016, more than 5,000 adults and children have been trained in these programs.

Applications for participation in courses have already begun – details and registration onhttp://brainbasket.org.
